Something you need to know about MSN Messenger

IMPORTANT: Microsoft is replacing Windows Live Messenger with Skype. All your contacts will be moved automatically. Take a look at The Complete Guide to Moving from Messenger to Skype for more information, alternatives and tips.

Now that Messenger 8.0 supports video and audio webchats, not many users will see the need to use version 7.

However, if neither of these are particularly important to you then version 7 might still be useful to you. Of course, whichever version you choose, you still have to sign in using your Hotmail or Windows Live account. Once installed, the first thing you'll see is that Microsoft Messenger 7 offers a slightly updated interface to version 6.

Messenger 7 offers Bonjour support, so you can detect and connect with users on the same local network as you. Features like sending files, displaying a picture or emoticons are unchanged. You can change your display name and add a personal message just by clicking on them.

One new feature is that you can give nicknames to your friends. Just click on their display name and start typing. We also liked the search feature, which is really handy to quickly find a contact or email address.

It's obvious that this upgrade is aimed at corporate users as they get the most significant updates though. The highly touted audio and video feature, with which you can have video conferences with your contacts, is only available to them.

The same goes with detailed presence information, as you'll need a version of Office Communications Server 2007 to use it.

Corporate users will love the new features in Messenger for Mac 7, like Bonjour Support, detailed presence information and especially audio and video. General users will find barely anything different from version 6 and should download Microsoft Messenger 8.0.

Important Messenger for Mac 7.0.3 does not work with Live Communications Server 2005. If your organization uses Live Communications Server 2005, you should use Messenger for Mac Version 6.0.

Issues. I've used it for a while but went back to 6.0 later. I hate the fact that you can't use/see emoticons or display pictures. Furthermore, it's impossible to send/receive files. Pros: Possibilities to use webcam / voice chat Cons: No file transfer possible, no visible display pictures, no emoticons available.

very basic but better than V8 beta! :(. Basically - Crap! No video / webcam or audio support... very very basic... however, I tried the beta V8 and that was no better! The video support is claimed as being the new feature (finally...!) doesn't actually work! I got audio to work when trying to use my webcam which is a start, but that's all, but the sacrifice is that any slightly custom emoticons don't work, you'll just get a small square where it would normally be... still no winks, no file sharing and personal photo's will not be displayed... all for what? video that doesn't work but instead the audio does. I'm going back to V7 until they get it right. Pros: basic text chat only Cons: no video no audio no winks not able to save any settings like personal photo's or status remarks... no nothin (but basic text messaging)

It's doing my head in to be honest!. Every time i open it im lucky if it stays on longer than five seconds it completely freezes and the timer appears, which means you have to force quit it. This new one has been released but for me its worse than the old one and im sick of it :/ Pros: none it doesn't stay on long enough for me to even try webcams Cons: literally everything

if I held my breath for v8 having PPC support, I might pass out. I'm currently stuck with Messenger v7 as I'm a PPC user. However, if v8 comes out of beta with PPC support, I'll be happy. Currently, the beta is Intel only, leaving me out. It's funny how my Yahoo client has webcam support, but Microsoft isn't opening it up for me.
